چکیده

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Completing this dissertation has been quite a journey! It has brought me immense professional and personal growth and a plethora of experiences that I will fondly remember. I am very grateful to have worked with Alan Erera and Martin Savelsbergh. They have been exceptional advisors who guided, motivated, and supported me to develop as a researcher and make this dissertation possible. Their patience and encouragement was constant and unwavering in every stage of my life as a Ph.D. student, especially during bad times. It has been a pleasure having them as my mentors. I would like to thank Ozlem Ergun, Joel Sokol, and Richard Wong for their time and effort to serve on my dissertation committee. I have greatly benefited from their insightful minds during our discussions about the research contained here as well as other unrelated projects. I am also grateful to several fellow doctoral students at Georgia Tech. There are too many friends to whom I am indebted for many reasons, too many people to mention here, but any list would have to include Adem and Moin, for the countless hours we spent discussing homework assignments during the early years, Dexin, Feng, and Ralph, for all the fun outings and the honorary membership into the Chinese community, and Kate and Jackie, for being the best officemates ever. Finally, I would like to thank my family whose support despite the distance has kept me going through personal hardships and has allowed me to complete this journey. To them, I dedicate this dissertation.

Improved Load Plan Design Through Integer Programming Based Local Search

We present advances both in modeling and algorithm design for a service network design problem faced by less-than-truckload (LTL) freight transportation carriers. The developed models more accurately capture key operations of today’s carriers: decisions for loaded and empty trailer movements are considered simultaneously, and a time discretization is used that can appropriately model the timing...

A mathematical model for hazmat and freight transportation in railway networks

In this paper, we develop a freight transportation model for railway network considering hazmat transportation issue. In the transportation system considered, different customers can request for carrying hazmat and non- hazmat boxes. It is assumed that the sequence of the trains in the network is known. The objective is assigning the non-hazmat boxes and hazmat boxes to wagons of the trains so ...

Performance Evaluation of the Provinces of Iran Reading To the Measures of Freight and Passenger Transportation

Freight and passenger transport are two main functions of the infrastructure and transportation networks in each country. It is required to efficiently utilize the transportation infrastructures to increase transportation-related performance measures. In this study, data envelopment analysis (DEA) model is used to evaluate performance of the Iranian provinces from the freight and passenger tran...

Moulin Mechanism Design for Freight Consolidation

In freight consolidation, a “fair” cost allocation scheme is critical for forming and sustaining horizontal cooperation that leads to reduced transportation cost. We study a cost-sharing problem in a freight consolidation system with one consolidation center and a common destination. In particular, we design a mechanism that collects bids from a set of suppliers, and then decides whose demand t...

A Mixed Integer Linear Programming Model For Solving Large-Scale Integrated Location-Routing Problems For Urban Logistics Applications at Groupe La Poste

In this work we present a large scale static, deterministic mixed inter linear programming model (MIP) solving an integrated location-routing problem (LRP) in the context of urban logistics services (ULS). We aim at determining a cost optimal infrastructure and fleet design for an urban consolidation and transportation network. The model is meant to quantitatively evaluate potential strategic m...
